What makes a good road?

My favourite roads are not necessarily the quickest.  I like the challenging twisty roads that motorcyclists have loved for years.

If you have a favourite road you would like to let others know about then why not post your suggestion to our notice board

Really good biking roads will usually have/be:

  • Single carriageway
  • National speed limit
  • Few solid white lines (bikes can overtake safely where cars cannot) - see how the A272 has been spoiled
  • Curves and bends which are not too sharp
  • Good visibility
  • Well surfaced (not surface dressed with loose gravel)
  • Some traffic but not too much
  • Free of housing and villages
  • Views and scenery for the days when you want to amble along

I'm not going to name an all time favourite here because I feel it can lead to over use which in turn leads to calls for more restrictions and heavier policing.  Suffice to say Wales is great, as is Scotland and parts of Northern England.
